UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND — The University of Richmond has received funding to enhance the existing Spiders Support Recovery program, which provides peer-led supports and activities for students in recovery from substance use disorder.

“As part of UR’s culture of well-being, we are here to support those in recovery and those wishing to learn more about a recovery lifestyle,” said Heather Sadowski, director of health promotion and grant lead.

The $25,000 grant, which is through the Virginia Commonwealth University Collegiate Recovery Program and funded by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, will support the personnel required for the program, opportunities for educational outreach, and the creation of campus collaborations.

"Our plan is to continue to develop, formalize, and expand supports for students in recovery and those seeking recovery-related resources for substance use, behavioral, or mental health challenges,” said Sadowski. “Our early efforts have highlighted the fact that creating and providing student support cannot be an isolated endeavor, and our collective work will expand our supportive community."

Spiders Support Recovery provides numerous resources, including in-person and online mutual aid meetings, substance-free gathering spaces, activities and events, and one-on-one recovery coaching.
