Erling Sjovold receives Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship

Erling Sjovold, associate professor of art in the Department of Art and Art History, recently learned that he received a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship for 2008-09.

The fellowship, administered by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, honors professional artists, graduate students and undergraduate students with monetary awards to support their work, advance their careers or further their education. Professional artists such as Sjovold receive awards of $8000.

The Virginia Museum of Art has presented the fellowships for 68 years, during which time the institution has supported over 1,000 artists with over $3.6 million.

The fellowship was established in 1940 by John Lee Pratt of Fredericksburg and has since been supplemented by gifts from the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation and the J. Warwick McClintic Jr. Scholarship Fund, with additional support from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Foundation.
