Team closes 2008 with first place win at Duke Invitational

The Department of Political Science’s mock trial team placed in three tournaments this year, finishing first at the Duke Invitational, second at the University of Virginia’s Great American Mock Trial Invitational and fifth at an invitational hosted by Elon University.

During these competitions, Richmond’s mock trial team defeated teams from Georgetown University, University of Virginia, Furman University, University of Georgia, George Washington University, Rhodes College, University of Iowa, University of Tennessee, Kennesaw State University and Eastern Kentucky University and finished ahead of teams from Yale University, Harvard University, Princeton University, Cornell University, Columbia University, Duke University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest University, University of California-Los Angeles, University of Southern California, University of California-Berkeley, University of Michigan, Washington & Lee University and others.

In the three tournaments, the team garnered six individual awards for best attorney and best witness and also won an award for sportsmanship. Over 550 teams from more than 300 colleges compete in college mock trial. Competitors participate in ranking polls that ranked Richmond’s team 13th in the country before their win at the Duke Invitational.

At Elon University’s invitational, Katy Groover, won two best attorney awards, both as plaintiff and as defense. The team was also awarded the “Southern Hospitality” award for sportsmanship.

At the University of Virginia’s Great American Mock Trial Invitation, which was held in the District of Columbia’s federal courthouse, the best teams in the country are invited to compete. In addition to the entire team earning a second place finish, Bill Cable received a best witness award.

At the Duke Invitational, Richmond’s team carried the tournament, and both Katy Groover and Brian Brower received best attorney awards. Bill Cable also won a best witness award.
