Department of Classical Studies hosts visiting scholar Loren J. Samons, II

With the help of the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation (USA), the Department of Classical Studies will receive senior visiting scholar Loren J. Samons, II, author of What's Wrong with Democracy? From Athenian Practice to American Worship during the week for February 18-22. His book compares classical Athenian democracy in ancient and modern times. During his visit, he will give departmental talks as well as University-wide lecture, "The Problems with Athenian Democracy," on February 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Brown-Alley Room in Weinstein Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The Onassis Public Benefit Foundation sponsors eminent scholars from the USA and abroad to hold week-long seminars and give lectures at university campuses in North and South America. The scholars' topics range in the area of Hellenic history and culture, including modern, Byzantine and ancient history, political thought in Greece and the Balkans during the 19th and 20th centuries, modern Greek literature (prose, poetry), archeology, philosophy, painting, sculpture, theater, cinema, dance, music, ancient Greek drama, theology, law, economy and finance.
