"Maternal Instinct" Student-Faculty Colloquy Nov. 10
Date: Nov. 10, 2008
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location:
Ryland Hall, Great Hall
Join Core professors Abigail Cheever (English) and Sara Pappas (French) in discussing Simone de Beauvoir's analysis of the female self as the prototypical Other in Western thought.
We will consider how de Beauvoir rewrites existentialist philosophy to account for the particular situation of women and how she re-imagines feminine stereotypes--maternal instinct, the softer sex, eternal feminine, Adam's rib, emotional and nurturing.
