"Color Lines: Racism and Society" Student-Faculty Colloquy Mar. 25

Date: Mar. 25, 2008
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: The Great Hall in Ryland Hall

Join Core professors Eileen O'Brien (sociology) and Eric Yellin (history) for a discussion of colors, lines and the human experience in The Souls of Black Folk and Age of Iron.

What does it mean to say that a society has a color line? What can W.E.B. Du Bois and J.M. Coetzee teach us about color lines and the experience of living along such lines? Was Mrs. Current a racist? What insights can be drawn from her experiences? How might they be relevant to understanding racism in the United States? How can Du Bois' concepts of "double consciousness" and "the veil" help us understand the experience of racism as portrayed by Coetzee?
