"Lifting the Veil on Life in Black and White" Student-Faculty Colloquy Mar. 24
Date: Mar. 24, 2009
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location:
Ryland Hall, Great Hall
Join Core Professors from South Africa and the D. R. Congo, Reingard Nethersole (English) & Kasongo Kapanga (modern literatures) for an informal conversation, "Lifting the Veil on Life in Black and White."
This colloquy will explore questions raised in the work of Shakespeare, DuBois and Coetzee about disjunctions of culture, race and class. Are conflicts conditioned by specific historical contexts inevitable? Can we overcome our socially fashioned prejudices and stereotypes, our differences real and imagined? Can we – should we – become colorblind? Students are invited to explore the views, attitudes and actions at society’s interface in Othello, The Souls of Black Folk and Age of Iron.
