Dr. Peter Iver Kaufman studies the political cultures of late antique, medieval and early modern Europe and North Africa. He has written extensively on conflict and authority in Latin Christendom and on religion, politics and drama in Elizabethan England.

He teaches courses such as the introductory leadership studies course Leadership and the Humanities and Justice and Civil Society, as well as advanced courses on political, cultural and religious leaders in late antiquity and early modern Europe.

Dr. Kaufman is editor-in-chief of the journal Religions. He is editing a forthcoming volume in the Jepson Studies in Leadership series on “Leadership and Elizabethan Culture” as well as a book series on cultural leadership, in which his book, “Religion Around Shakespeare,” is scheduled to be published in 2013.

He is the author of, mostly recently, “Incorrectly Political: Augustine and Thomas More,” and he has written articles in journals such as Leadership and Journal of Late Antiquity and “The Cambridge University Press Companion to ‘The City of God.’”

Founder of the Scholars Latino Initiative, which has five chapters in North Carolina and Virginia, Dr. Kaufman also teaches and consults on immigration and education.

Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he taught history and religious studies, he came to the University of Richmond in 2008.
