Recreation and Wellness and Human Resources encourage employees to stay active
July 3, 2012
Some ran. Some walked. But everyone had a good time at a four-mile run and post-race office party.
Last month, 75 University staff members from 20 departments registered to run or walk in the Connects Federal Credit Union Corporate 4-Miler at Innsbrook. The event, hosted by SportsBackers, brings together teams from large employers in the greater Richmond area.
The Richmond crew was organized through a partnership between Human Resources and Recreation and Wellness.
“We felt it was a great way for employees to get to know their fellow colleagues outside of the office and to promote physical activity in a relaxed environment,” said Tracy Cassalia, a health educator at the University. “It was also a great way for campus departments to build unity.”
The employees who ran or walked represented a wide range of departments and ages. Here are the team’s top times:
Men’s runners: Jim Merritt (Advancement)
Women’s runners: Brittany Schaal (University Police)
Walkers: Nancy Propst (Department of Geography and the Environment)
This year marks the first time Richmond has fielded a team for the race, but Cassalia adds that staff are already planning for next year and hope for an even bigger turnout.
Editor's note: A previous version of this story incorrectly identified the top walkers. Our apologies and congrats go to Nancy Propst for pounding the pavement in record time.
