Students gain real-world experience in consulting and management
Consulting is the career of choice for some Jepson students.

Carly Fullam, ’13, and Scott Rockensies, ’13, are two students considering such a career path – and they are using their required internship to test the waters of the consulting sector.

Both Fullam and Rockensies are interning with MAXIMUS, a leading management and consulting services firm that works with governments around the world. The company also runs programs in countries such as Israel, Australia, Canada and the U.K.

“Since attending the Spiders in Consulting Road Trip with Career Services in January, I have pictured myself in the consulting industry,” says Rockensies.

The trip gives students an opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., to learn about opportunities from professionals, including young alumni, working in the field.

A dual major in leadership studies and English, he is working with the Proposal Operations Team in the Health and Human Services Division and participating “in each step of the proposal effort, assisting in quality assurance measures, writing and editing proposal sections and analyzing government solicitations, as well as past performance.”

Fullam is also working with proposals, in the Federal Proposal Division. She is assisting in developing, writing and editing proposal documents.  “I have also been given the opportunity to manage new business bids and proposal development teams,” she says.

Fullam agrees that she could see herself working in the consulting sector after graduation, and adds that her leadership studies classes have well prepared her for her internship and a possible career in the field.

“Given that I have been in management positions, I have had to deal with power struggles, group dynamics and how to direct and motivate groups to work toward one purpose,” she says.

The internship is confirming for Rockensies that he would enjoy a career in consulting, although perhaps in a specific area.

“My summer with MAXIMUS so far has been a unique and exciting experience,” he says. “This internship has opened up many doors and has also exposed me to the world behind consulting.”
