Law Students Study International Law and Finance of BRICS Countries

Second and third-year law students had the opportunity to learn about international law and finance issues presented by the economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (also known as the "BRICS" countries) during an intensive course offered in October. Visiting scholar Oliver C. Ruppel, professor of Law at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa taught the one-credit course October 28–31. Topics included the rise of BRICS, emerging issues in the international financial systems, BRICS under public international law, aspects of global justice and human security, and the green economy and climate change.

Professor Ruppel specializes in public international law and diplomacy, world trade law, environmental law, regional integration policy, and sustainable development law. He lectures worldwide and serves as AR5 Coordinating Lead Author for the Chapter on Africa of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Working Group II. As a Regional Resource Person on Trade and Environment in Sub-Saharan Africa to the World Trade Organization (WTO), he became one of the worldwide fourteen Founding Chair Holders in the Academic Chairs Program of the WTO.
