And a good time was had by all...

The Osher Institute of Lifelong Learning at the University of Richmond celebrated its tenth anniversary in grand style at our annual fall mixer on September 10th. We were entertained by a magical gourd band upon arrival at the Jepson Alumni Center and very talented young harpists of Richmond’s American Youth Harp Ensemble.

Delicious small plate food and beverages were attractively presented by the University of Richmond’s wonderful catering service. Nothing was stinted in this celebration.

We have progressed from a steering committee to more than 600 members in ten years, under the leadership of Senior Associate Dean Pat Brown. It was Pat Brown who investigated the grant available from Mr. Bernard Osher to fund institutes of life-long learning. Her belief that “If you build it, they will come,” turned out wonderfully. We enjoyed a panoply of course offerings, interest groups and special events. All were built upon the foundation laid 10 years ago.

James Narduzzi, Dean of the School of Professional and Continuing Studies of the University of Richmond, commended Osher staff and members for the good work that led us to this successful point.

I tell my friends and family around the country that our Osher Institute offers more interesting choices than I have time to pursue.  This is a wonderful problem for all who join Osher. All of it is supplied by volunteer class leaders, support teams and especially, a dedicated staff in Peggy Watson and Debra Guild who superbly handle the formation and scheduling of a myriad of classes and activities.

I want to thank everyone who attended our celebration as well as all who graciously helped make it so much fun. Let’s make it another great 10 years!
