The Photo Library is the brain-child of the late Professor Stuart L. Wheeler, who led summer study abroad courses to Greece for many years. His idea offered a solution to a problem teachers and scholars were facing when they wanted to make use of images that might be copyrighted. Obtaining permission to use copyrighted images could be a long and difficult matter, and hence a real impediment to the free dissemination of new knowledge.
Professor Wheeler set loose his students with SLR, and more recently digital, cameras and the photographs they took are now part of a widely used library of images of historical sites and artifacts, available to the public free for any educational, non-profit use.
As this resource is an ongoing project, new photographers will be needed.
Educators and scholars who would like to use any of the photographs are asked only to contact the department with details about the photographs they’re using.
