Department of History names 2008-2009 Freeman Professor

The University of Richmond's Department of History has named University of South Carolina history professor Don H. Doyle the 2008-2009 Douglas Southall Freeman Professorship.

The Douglas Southall Freeman Professorship was established in honor of the noted biographer and journalist by his family and allows the department to bring a distinguished visiting historian to the campus annually. The Freeman Professor teaches one course and either delivers a series of public lectures or organizes an historical conference.

Doyle, who received a Ph.D. from Northwestern University, is the McCausland Professor of History at the University of South Carolina and the director of ARENA, the Association for Research on Ethnicity and Nationalism in the Americas.

He has held positions at Vanderbilt University and the University of Michigan-Dearborn and has been a visitor at the University of Rome, Italy; the University of Genoa, Italy; the University of Leeds, England; and the Pontifícia Universidade Católica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Doyle's current research involves an interpretation of the foundations of America's national ideology from the Revolution through Reconstruction. He teaches courses in U.S. history, including courses on Southern history and nationalism.
