School of Arts & Sciences showcases undergraduate research at Student Symposium Apr. 17
The School of Arts & Sciences will host its annual Student Research Symposium on April 17 at the Modlin Center for the Arts. The symposium celebrates student and faculty collaborative achievement in research and the creative arts and will include over 150 oral and poster presentations this year.
Student presenters have participated in an independent research experience, such as a summer research fellowship, an independent study project, performance or senior art exhibit, under the mentorship of a faculty member in the School of Arts & Sciences.
Ten-minute oral presentations and one-hour poster presentations take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Poster sessions begin at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., and each session features approximately 40 posters. Artwork will be on display in the Modlin Center’s Harnett Museum of Art.
A full schedule of presentations is available online. Presentations vary widely with topics that range from Russian chair dance to 20th-century Irish feminism to the conformational analysis of HIV-1 protease inhibitors. Awards will be given to the best student papers and accomplishments in the creative arts.
In honor of the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s first astronomical use of the telescope, the Richmond Astronomical Society and the Department of Physics will partner to celebrate the international year of astronomy with a special evening lecture and stargazing experience following the symposium. A short talk will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Gottwald Science Center’s auditorium and, assuming there are clear skies, participants will then be invited to walk out to the football practice fields for an evening under the stars.
The School of Arts & Sciences is also hosting a research video contest in conjunction with the symposium. Symposium participants have until April 10 to submit a five-minute video via YouTube, documenting their research experience. First, second and third place winners will receive $500, $250 and $100 prizes respectively. Winners will be announced at the symposium. Video links should be submitted to as@richmond.edu.
