Tredegar conference focuses on the South's bitter relationship with Lincoln before, during and after the Civil War and wraps up Jepson Leadership Forum series

Online registration and Conference schedule

Top Civil War scholars will convene on campus March 12-14 to discuss the bitter relationship between Lincoln and the South.

The Lincoln and the South conference is produced by the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar. It is offered in partnership with the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond. During the 2008-09 academic year, the School has devoted its annual Jepson Leadership Forum to the leadership legacy of the 16th president.

The conference--which includes a reception and tour of the museum, a breakfast for secondary school educators, and a walking tour of Lincoln's visit to Richmond--opens with a talk by James M. McPherson on "Tried by War: Lincoln as Commander in Chief " at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 12. Friday morning's keynote by historian of the South and University of Richmond President Edward L. Ayers will be followed by a series of interactive discussions that continue until Saturday noon.

  • Lincoln and the South Get to Know One Another, chaired by Charles B. Dew (Williams College), explores events leading up to the Civil War that shaped Lincoln's political philosophy and his understanding of the South.
  • Lincoln and the South at War, chaired by Emory M. Thomas (University of Georgia), looks at Lincoln’s misreading of Southern resolve for secession and his management of the war.
  • Lincoln in the Southern Memory, chaired by McPherson (Princeton University), assesses Lincoln’s plan for reconciliation and how Lincoln is remembered in the South.
