Spanish Embassy offers teaching assistantships in Spain

The Embassy of Spain is offering 1,000 teaching assistantships for the 2008-2009 academic year. 

The assistants will have the opportunity to learn about Spanish language and culture and use their experience, upon their return to the United States or Canada, to help develop cultural understanding between the citizens of Spain and the United States and Canada.

At the same time, the program provides Spanish students and teachers of English an opportunity to broaden and increase their knowledge of the English language and American or Canadian culture through interaction with native speakers.

Requirements

Candidates should:

  • Hold a US or Canadian passport.
  • Be enrolled in their final year of their BA, BS, MA or MSc, or have completed any of those university degrees.
  • Have an intermediate to advanced level of Spanish.

Functions and duties of the assistants:

  • Grantees will share their language and culture in elementary, secondary and language schools throughout Spain under the supervision and guidance of a classroom teacher.
  • Assistants will have 12 hours per week lectorship.
  • Assistants and the classroom teacher (or the school representatives) may agree upon other activities and responsibilities they should be involved in, including attending faculty meetings, making presentations in classes and participating in extra-curricular activities such as workshops, school trips, student exchanges, music and theater performances or sporting events.

Specific conditions of the grants:

  • A monthly allowance of €631 after taxes (equivalent to $820 US or $967 Canadian as of January 24, 2007).
  • Teacher orientation course at the beginning of the school year.
  • Medical insurance.
  • Official Certificate, issued by the Regional Education Authorities.
