David S. Salisbury, Assistant Professor of Geography and the Environment, has been selected for a Fulbright award to Peru. His project, “Amazonia for Amazonians: Territory, Natural Resource Management and Capacity Building in the Peruvian Amazon,” will take Dr. Salisbury to the Universidad Nacional de Ucayali (UNU) for a combined lecture and research appointment. He is well acquainted with UNU, which awarded him a position as honorary professor three years ago because of his work in the training and mentoring of Peruvian UNU students over a number of years, as well as for his collaborative research with faculty there.

Dr. Salisbury, a former Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala, has worked with five indigenous groups in the Amazon, and has published in both English and Spanish on topics related to the natural resources of both the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon. In summer 2009, he took three UR students to do collaborative research with UNU and he received the University of Richmond International Education Faculty Award for 2009-2010.

The Fulbright project in Peru during the fall 2010 semester will focus on the links between territory, power, and natural resource management on indigenous lands in the Ucayali region.
