On a hot 89 degree Friday afternoon, the Spiders opened up against the host Miami Hurricanes. The Spiders came out storming, outshooting Miami 17 to 2, but the Miami goalie was as hot as the Florida sun and the UR men only had a slim 2–0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The heat and hot goalie took its toll on the Spiders in the second quarter as they went into half time down 5–3 despite outshooting Miami by a large margin. Junior Jack Hayden (Purchase, N.Y./Fordham Prep) scored twice in the first half and freshman Nate Volpert (Haverford, Pa./Haverford School) added another. All three first-half goals were assisted by sophomore Robby Barnhart (Chanhassen, Minn./Blake).

The second half started slowly with several Spiders cramping up and still having trouble adjusting to the heat. The Spiders eventually found themselves down 6-3. This is when the UR men said, "enough is enough," and ended the quarter with two unanswered goals, and down 6-5. Volpert scored the fourth goal on an assist by Warren Kraft (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Portledge School) and junior Clay Palmer (Annapolis, Md./Severn) had the final tally of the quarter on an assist by Scott O’Brien (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan).

The Spiders came out storming in the fourth and dominated possession time. The Spiders would tie the game on Volpert’s third goal of the day off of another assist by Kraft. Barnhart scored the final two goals of the day, both assisted by Kraft, to give the University of Richmond an 8-6 victory! Freshman goalie Ryan McDevitt (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern Prep) totaled 13 saves on the day. Freshman defender Brain Topper (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) led the team with 7 ground balls.

Scoring: Barnhart (2g, 3a), Hayden (2g), Volpert (3g), Palmer (1g), Helm (1a), O’Brien (1a)
