Paralegal Studies program chair publishes in Journal of Applied Management & Entrepreneurship

April 2, 2012

Porcher Taylor, professor and paralegal studies program chair in the School of Professional & Continuing Studies, recently published with colleague Douglas Bosse an article in the January 2012 issue of the peer-reviewed Journal of Applied Management & Entrepreneurship.

Taylor’s co-author, Bosse, is associate professor of management in the Robins School of Business. Taylor holds a dual faculty appointment in the Schools of Professional & Continuing Studies and Business.

Their article, titled “The Second Glass Ceiling Impedes Women Entrepreneurs,” identifies a second “glass ceiling”—one beyond the traditional, oft-studied phenomenon that impedes the advancement of talented women professionals into senior executive roles inside large corporations.

This second glass ceiling is a gender bias that obstructs women-owned small firms from accessing the financial capital required to start new firms and fuel the growth of existing firms.

The article identifies and defines this second glass ceiling, presents evidence and causes of its existence, and suggests strategies to enable women entrepreneurs and financial capital managers to mitigate its negative effects.

University of Richmond students, faculty and staff may read Bosse and Taylor’s article online.
