July 30, 2012

Dr. Tom Shields, director of the Center for Leadership in Education at the University of Richmond, has been invited to speak at the Governor’s K-12 Education Reform Summit.

“The Governor’s K-12 Education Reform Summit: Investing in Students Today, Creating the Workforce of Tomorrow” will be held August 15-27, 2012, in Richmond. The summit is hosted by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and is chaired by Jim Dyke, former Virginia Secretary of Education under Governor Wilder, and House Majority Leader and high school teacher Kirk Cox.

The summit will feature state and national leaders—among them Shields—to discuss strategies for successful classrooms, expanding school choice, enhancing teacher quality and continuing focus on workforce development.

Shields joins other thought leaders in education and workforce development including Dr. Bill Bosher, professor of public policy and education and director of the Commonwealth Policy Institute; Joel Klein, former chancellor of the New York City Schools; Jennifer McNelly, president of The Manufacturing Institute; and Governor Bob Wise, former governor of West Virginia.

The Summit provides opportunities for participants—Virginia legislators, education stakeholders and policy makers—to share best practices and opportunities for collaboration.

As director of the Center for Leadership in Education, Shields coordinates the University’s graduate program in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. The Center is a partnership between the University’s Jepson School of Leadership Studies and the School of Professional and Continuing Studies.
