"In Common" Program for Spring 2013

The Changing Role of Women in Islam

In January 2013, the University of Richmond was awarded the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Campus programming on Islamic Culture is part of the grant and the Office of Common Ground, the Office of the Chapliancy, and Boatwright Library are collaborating to sponsor the Spring 2013 “In Common” program. On Tuesday, March 19, Ambassador Sallama Shaker will speak on “Women in Islam”. Ambassador Shaker was the first appointed woman Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Americas in the history of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Shaker has published many articles on the issues of peace, development  and women in the Middle East and she is currently a visiting professor at Yale University. Throughout her career she has been active on women’s rights in the Islamic world.
