Dr. Manuella Meyer, Asst. Professor of History, has been appointed a Larson Fellow in the John W. Kluge Center of the Library of Congress.  The residential fellowship includes a monthly stipend, workspace, and access to the Library’s collections.

Dr. Meyer’s research topic is National Melancholia: Madness, State, and Society in Rio de Janeiro, 1808-1940, which she describes as examining “how the borders and circumstances of madness were defined and redefined  by mentally ill people themselves, Catholic Church authorities, psychiatrists, spiritist mediums, and candomblé healers.”

The David B. Larson Fellowship in Health and Spirituality is named in honor of the late founder of the International Center for the Integration of Health and Spirituality.  Dr. Meyer has taught at the University of Richmond since 2009 after completing master and doctorate degrees at Yale.
