Student advisor co-presents session at national college personnel convention

May 10, 2013

John Butt, GC’13, academic advisor in the School of Professional and Continuing Studies, recently co-presented a session at the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) 2013 Annual Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Butt co-presented with Justin Jones, a coordinator from Arizona State University. Their session was titled “New Student Orientation and the Nontraditional Student” and featured the School’s new student orientation for adult students. It also included ways a larger, public institution like Arizona State orients its students to the university.

The ACPA Las Vegas 2013 Convention was themed “Inspiring Communities of Wellbeing” and was held March 4-7, 2013, at three different resort properties in Las Vegas.

Butt’s presentation abstract reads as follows:

New student orientation programs are uniquely poised to address the needs of nontraditional students enter the higher education setting. With this student population comprising more than a third of all college enrollments, administrators must seek out creative and innovative ways to address the needs of nontraditional learners through programs that promote inclusion, success, development, and retention. Through deliberate and effective design, new student orientation programs can aid in the successful transition to college for nontraditional students.
