Constitutional historian to speak May 16 in Marshall Center Lecture Series

Constitutional historian Kent Newmyer will discuss “The Lost World of John Marshall” May 16, 4:30 p.m., at University of Richmond’s Weinstein Hall, Brown-Alley Room.

The talk will focus on the period from 1803 through 1807 and Marshall’s work to define the federal judiciary’s role in the new government. Marshall was the fourth and longest-serving chief justice of the United States.

Newmyer is a professor of law and history at the University of Connecticut School of Law. His books include “John Marshall and the Heroic Age of the Supreme Court” and “Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story: Statesman of the Old Republic.” He received an award for the latter from the American Historical Association in 1985 for the best book on law and society.

His talk is part of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies’ 2012-13 Marshall Center Lecture Series. A reception will follow.
