Cosby High School, led by adjunct professor Dr. Brenda Mayo, recognized among National Blue Ribbon Schools

October 16, 2015

The U.S. Department of Education recently recognized Cosby High School, led by SPCS adjunct professor Brenda Mayo, as an Exemplary High Performing School among National Blue Ribbon Schools.

On September 29, 2015, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recognized 335 schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2015. This prestigious recognition is based on a school’s overall academic excellence or its progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. National Blue Ribbon Schools demonstrate that all students can achieve at high levels.

Chesterfield County’s Cosby High School was one of the National Blue Ribbon Schools to be recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School. Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. Student subgroup performance and high school graduation rates are also at the highest levels.

Cosby High School principal and University of Richmond adjunct professor of graduate education Dr. Brenda Mayo, who has served as the planning and building principal since the school opened its doors in 2006, said the national award reaffirms the 10-year commitment of the Cosby staff, students and community to sustaining high levels of academic achievement in every content area and exemplary work in all Virginia SOLs subjects.
