SPCS awards scholarship funds to 24 students for the spring semester

January 28, 2016

The School of Professional and Continuing Studies (SPCS) has awarded scholarship funds to 24 recipients for the spring semester, totaling over $33,000.

SPCS awards scholarship funds two times per academic year, once each for the fall and spring semesters. Spring semester scholarship awards are generally used to support newly admitted students to degree-seeking SPCS programs. For the entire 2015-2016 academic year including the spring semester, SPCS has awarded over $130,000 in scholarship funds to about 100 recipients.

A sampling of award recipients for the spring includes Teacher Licensure Preparation students enrolled in their student-teaching experience (and therefore unable to support themselves by working while taking classes); Weekend College students carrying full-time course loads; and those returning to school to complete their first undergraduate degree. The common thread for all recipients is a demonstrated financial need.

Degree-seeking students at the graduate and undergraduate levels who have demonstrated financial need based on federal guidelines are eligible to apply for scholarships. A committee of SPCS faculty and staff review applications and, in consultation with the University’s Financial Aid Office, make award decisions. Applications for fall scholarships are now open online; the deadline to apply for fall awards is June 1.

Scholarship funds come from a variety of sources, including endowed scholarships. SPCS also raises funds for scholarships, most notably through the annual SPCS Golf Tournament. To donate to the scholarship funds, visit givenow.richmond.edu and search among designation options for “SPCS Annual Scholarship Fund.” Scholarship gifts are always welcome and deeply appreciated by recipients.
