East Carolina University professor gives talk, "No Easy Road: The Politics of Naming Streets after Martin Luther King, Jr.," Oct. 21

Derek Alderman is an associate professor at East Carolina University and is a specialist in cultural and historical geography, with a focus on the politics of public commemoration and symbolic landscapes in the American South.
Alderman specializes in the role that African Americans play in reshaping and reclaiming the American South and has established himself as a national authority on the politics of naming streets after Martin Luther King, Jr.
Alderman has contributed to numerous publications regarding MLK street naming, civil rights memorials, and race relations and landscape in the American South. Alderman co-founded the Study of the American South Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers in 2007 and currently serves as the president of the Southeastern Division of the AAG.
