On Thursday, March 26 at 4:00 p.m. in Weinstein Hall's Brown-Alley Room, Farha Ternikar will speak on "American Muslim Women and the Process of Unveiling."
Professor Tarnikar is an assistant professor of sociology at Le Moyne College. She examines changes in modesty practices among American Muslim women. In particular, she explores how giving up the veil or hijab is framed by life circumstances such as marital status, racism and class. Ternikar argues that changes in modesty norms do not necessarily represent changes in religious ideology or commitment for American Muslim women
