UR Family Loses Two Beloved Members
July 16, 2010
Tragedy struck the University of Richmond community this week, as sisters Jamie, ’10, and Paige, ’12, Malone were killed in an automobile crash.
When asked to describe Jamie, ’10, and Paige, ’12, Malone, the same theme emerges from friends, University of Richmond administrators, fellow residents of Floral Park, N.Y., and seemingly anyone else who had the pleasure of knowing them—good-hearted.
The two sisters were killed in a car accident on July 15 on their way to work near their home. The crash also took the life of Michael Mulhall. You need no further testament to their character than to know their destination—Camp Anchor, a camp for disabled children and adults, where the sisters both have worked for multiple summers.
But this was not just a summer job to Jamie and Paige. Rather, it was a way of life. Both young women were leaders on campus and active in serving their communities, both here in Richmond and back home in New York. Both also were members of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
“Paige and Jamie, in their idealism and selfless devotion, inspired all who knew them,” said President Edward Ayers. “The University is diminished by their loss but strengthened by their example.”
News of the tragic accident stunned and saddened the University community. The Malone family has deep connections to UR. Jamie and Paige’s older brother, Terence, graduated in 2006, and their older sister, Daphne, graduated in 2008.
“This family is our family,” said Ayers.
Jamie Malone graduated in May with a degree in sociology and a minor in elementary education. She completed her student teaching at Maybeury Elementary School in the Richmond area and was slated to begin teaching there full-time in the fall. A rising junior, Paige was an accounting major in the Robins School of Business.
On Monday, July 19, there will be a funeral mass at Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Floral Park at 9:30 a.m. At that same time, the Chaplaincy will host a Service of Remembrance in Cannon Memorial Chapel on the University of Richmond campus.
In lieu of flowers, the Malone family requests contributions to a new scholarship fund at the University of Richmond in loving memory of Jamie and Paige, "so that another young woman can be given the chance to have her dreams come true at the school that is such a part of this family."
