University of Richmond Dancers to Present "Dancelebration" Feb. 20-23

The University Dancers of the University of Richmond will present "Dancelebration," their 18th annual spring concert, Feb. 20-23 in the Alice Jepson Theatre of the Modlin Center for the Arts. Performances Thursday, Friday and Saturday will begin at 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.

Myra Steinberg Daleng, director of dance, choreographed three dances, including a tap piece for 10 dancers with music composed and performed by Mark Lomanno, a 2001 graduate of the university, and his jazz quartet. She also choreographed a solo piece for senior Tiffani Harris of Atlanta, Ga., and a comedy piece featuring two "sumo wrestlers."

Anne Norman Van Gelder, assistant director of dance, will present her piece for 10 students, which will be accompanied by an original composition by Lomanno's quartet. Van Gelder will perform a solo with Lomanno at the piano.

Choreographer, teacher and performer Gerri Houlihan, formerly with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet Company and the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, has created a modern work for nine dancers with an original composition by Jerome Begin, who will perform with percussionist Marc Langelier and cellist Chris Lancaster.

The dancers also will perform a restaged classical modern quintet by Jill Brammer, a blues duet by Pam Turner and three student-choreographed works, including a closing piece for all 20 dancers that features jazz, tap, modern and pointe work.
