Robins School of Business appoints two as 2012-13 executives-in-residence

July 31, 2012

Two local business leaders have been appointed as the 2012-13 Robins School of Business executives-in-residence at the University of Richmond.

John Sherman Jr., retired vice chairman, CEO and president of the investment advisory firm Scott & Stringfellow, and Bob Piazza, former vice president of human resources and talent manager of science and technology company Danaher Corp., will help Robins School students with professional and career development.

The executive-in-residence program began with an endowment by the Manville Foundation for Private Enterprise in 1979 to bring distinguished business leaders to the Robins School. Sherman and Piazza will serve as what Robins Dean Nancy A. Bagranoff calls “super-mentors,” available to meet with students and provide guidance in specific professional fields.

“We’re delighted to be able to provide our students with access to executives who have a wealth of experience to share. They can help students to understand the breadth of opportunities available to them and coach them to be able to secure their career path of choice,” Bagranoff said.

Sherman has worked in the financial industry since 1973 and is a 2012 Greater Richmond Business Hall of Fame laureate. He serves on the boards of Albemarle Corporation, The Community Foundation (as chairman), VCU Health System, The Miller Center Foundation and the Vestry of Saint Stephens Episcopal Church. A native of Washington, D.C., Sherman earned a bachelor’s degree in British literature from Princeton University and his MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. He will focus on mentoring in accounting and financial career development.

Piazza spent 32 years as a human resources professional. He earned a bachelor’s degree in literature and communications from Pace University and a master’s of management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has taught as an adjunct instructor of management in the Robins School MBA program since 2011. Piazza will focus on mentoring in management and marketing career development.
