Chinese chamber ensemble to perform Nov. 13 for Weinstein International Center's global music series

October 31, 2012

The chamber ensemble Music From China will perform at the University of Richmond Nov. 13, 3 p.m., in the Weinstein International Center Commons as part of the center’s global music series.

Founded in 1984 by director Susan Cheng, the ensemble performs both traditional and contemporary Chinese music. It is the first Chinese ensemble to receive an Adventurous Programming award from Chamber Music America and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers for creative programs that combine the music of East and West. The group also has been recognized by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Chamber Music America and the New York State Music Fund, among others.

Music From China travels throughout the United States and the world, promoting Chinese culture through music and training young Chinese musicians. The ensemble’s artistic director, Wang Guowei, was born in Shanghai and joined the Shanghai traditional orchestra at age 17. The New York Times and The Washington Post have called him the “master of the erhu” – the instrument he plays for the ensemble.
