February 18, 2013

Sports Backers, a Richmond nonprofit organization that promotes physical activity and wellness, presented University of Richmond with an Active RVA Certification for implementing innovative programs to promote employee health, wellness and physical activity.

Sports Backers recognized 38 employers from the metro-Richmond area at a luncheon Feb. 12. “Having so many companies emphasize the importance of corporate wellness and physical activity is great for the Richmond region,” said Jon Lugbill, Sports Backers executive director. “As we strive to make Richmond the most physically active region in the country, having all these business leaders say ‘I’m in’ for creating a culture of physical activity in the workplace will play a big role in motivating and inspiring people.”

“This award affirms what we suspected — the University of Richmond offers employees excellent health and wellness benefits, resulting in a happier, healthier and more productive work force,” said Tom Roberts, assistant vice president of Richmond’s Department of Recreation and Wellness.

Richmond offers fulltime employees and students free access to the Weinstein Center, an award-winning fitness facility containing a three-court gymnasium, swimming pool, indoor track, cardio and strength training machines, weightlifting areas and more. The center provides exercise classes, health assessments, nutrition programs and outdoor adventure activities.
