Rick Mayes selected by students to speak at second annual Last Lecture Series April 1

March 4, 2013

Rick Mayes, a University of Richmond political science professor, will give his “last lecture” April 1, 7 p.m., at Jepson Alumni Center as the 2013 installment of the university’s Last Lecture Series.

Last lectures are held at universities across the country, inspired by the popularity of the actual final lecture by Carnegie Mellon University professor Randy Pausch in 2007. The series began at Richmond in 2012, sponsored by the Office of the Provost and organized by students, who select one professor to speak each year.

Mayes will respond to the question, “If you were to deliver a lecture that would be your last, what would you say?” He was chosen in February from nominations by more than 550 students.

A graduate of Richmond, Mayes has taught at the university since 2002. His academic focus is healthcare policy, and he has consulted on the topic for The White House, AARP and other agencies and organizations. As faculty director of Richmond’s Sophomore Scholars-in-Residence Program since 2008, he has taught a class on global public health policy issues and led students on service learning trips to Peru and the Dominican Republic. In 2007, Mayes received the university’s Distinguished Educator Award, and students named him Richmond College Faculty Member of the Year.

Mayes’ Last Lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, visit http://provost.richmond.edu/last-lecture  or call 804-404-3289.
