September 16, 2013

Timothy Barney, assistant professor of rhetoric and communication studies at the University of Richmond, will receive the Gerald R. Miller Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award from the National Communication Association.

Barney’s dissertation, titled “(Re)Placing America: Cold War Mapping and the Mediation of International Space” examines how the United States used cartography to deal with the demands of its increased international presence during the second half of the 20th century. In 2012, Barney won three awards for his work: the Lynda Lee Kaid Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Political Communication Division of NCA, Dissertation of the Year from the Cultural Studies Division of NCA and the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the American Society for the History of Rhetoric.

Barney will receive the award at NCA’s annual convention, Nov. 21–24 in Washington, D.C.

Barney joined Richmond’s faculty in August 2011 after receiving a doctorate in speech communication and rhetoric from the University of Maryland, College Park. His areas of expertise include Cold War rhetoric, internationalism and Eastern European political culture.
