Law School student and Marine Corps officer wins scholarship from The Tillman Foundation

September 16, 2013

Greg Collins, a second year student at the University of Richmond School of Law and active-duty Marine Corps officer, was awarded a prestigious Tillman Military Scholarship.

Out of 1,800 applications, the Wilmington, Del., native was selected as one of 60 recipients—a 3 percent acceptance rate—and is the first recipient for the university since the program began in 2009. Tillman Scholars are chosen based on career success and ambitions, leadership potential, and desire and demonstration of service to the community. Military veterans and active-duty members of any military branch, as well as spouses, are eligible for the program which provides an average of $11,000 per recipient.

Collins, who received his B.S. in ocean engineering from the United States Naval Academy, has been stationed in Iraq, California, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, the Philippines and Quantico before coming to Richmond. He hopes to forge a relationship between the university and the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center near campus.

Pat Tillman, for whom the Tillman Scholarship program is named, turned down a multi-million dollar professional football contract to serve in the elite Army Rangers in Afghanistan. He was killed-in-action in 2004. Today, The Pat Tillman Foundation aims to build a diverse community of leaders committed to service to others through its scholars program.
