Healing properties of Navajo ceremonies to be discussed by University of Arizona associate dean

Lori Arviso Alvord, associate dean of student affairs and admissions at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and a member of the Navajo Indian tribe, will speak at the University of Richmond on “The Healing Properties of Navajo Ceremonies,” Nov. 11, 7:30 p.m., in Weinstein Hall, Brown-Alley Room. 

Sponsored by the sociology and anthropology departments, the lecture is free and open to the public.

Alvord will focus on topics covered in her 1999 memoir describing her journey from the Navajo reservation to becoming a surgeon and her efforts to provide culturally competent care and create healing environments based on principles of traditional Navajo healing.
