United States Marine Corps 2nd Lt. Kevin McCann, a law student at the University of Richmond, will receive the Commandant’s Trophy in a ceremony Nov. 23 during halftime at the football game in Robins Stadium, which begins at 4 p.m.

The Commandant’s Trophy is awarded to officer candidates with the highest GPA in the Platoon Leader’s Course, the equivalent of basic training for officers. McCann attended PLC training last summer and was commissioned on Aug. 9.

McCann, a native of St. Petersburg, Fla., enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 2007. He served six years as an enlisted Marine, attaining the rank of sergeant.

He deployed with his reserve unit to Afghanistan, where his squad was hit with more than 50 percent combat loses. He had to quickly assume higher leadership roles and responsibilities under fire.

He received a Purple Heart and Combat Action Ribbon during the deployment.
