First-year law students to volunteer for service projects

August 21, 2014

University of Richmond first-year law students will complete a number of community service projects this weekend as part of their orientation experience.

On Aug. 23, 70 students will volunteer at three different sites around Richmond: Hands Up Ministries Community House, Lewis Ginter Community Kitchen Garden and Woodville Elementary School.

Hands Up Ministries is a local nonprofit, whose mission is to change lives by providing affordable, stable housing opportunities. Students will paint, plant flowers and help prepare the community garden for winter.

At Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, students will remove tomato vines and stakes, weed and plant fall crops like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. It’s part of Lewis Ginter’s continuing aid in the fight against hunger by dedicating an entire garden to growing vegetables for FeedMore.

At Woodville Elementary School, volunteers will complete a number of projects to help spruce up the school’s auditorium, including cleaning and organizing the stage area, helping build an area to better house sports equipment and touching up paint. The projects will help create an inviting and educationally focused area for students to enjoy in the fall. University of Richmond’s Law School has had a four-year partnership with Woodville through a classroom mentorship program for third grade students.

Tara Casey, Director of the Harry L. Carrico Center for Pro Bono Service, organized these orientation service projects.
