Tis the season to job hunt; career advisors at University of Richmond offer tips for furthering your employment search over holiday break

December 9, 2014

If your New Year’s resolution is to find a new job, don’t wait to get started. Many people believe that hiring stops during the holidays, but lots of companies continue their recruitment processes throughout December.

“Holiday break can really be an ideal time to job hunt,” said Tonya Osmond, a UR career advisor. “Many job seekers temporarily drop out of the job market during the holidays, which equals less competition for available positions. Plus, new budgets take affect in January, which ramps up the hiring for companies looking to fill vacant positions before the New Year.”

To enhance your job search during the holiday break employ these tips from the University of Richmond Office of Alumni and Career Services.

Update Your Resume, Cover Letter and LinkedIn

What better time than during a holiday break to revitalize your resume and cover letter? Be sure to transfer your updated resume to your LinkedIn account, as well as adding your new skills, engaging in groups you are a part of and updating your photo if necessary.

Network at Holiday Events

This time of year can be a great opportunity to network with people you know, as well as people you don’t. A neighborhood gathering, office party or friend’s cocktail party can all be great ways to make new contacts. Arm yourself with personal business cards that contain your contact information, LinkedIn profile URL and qualifications.

Reconnect with Past Contacts

The holiday season is a great time to renew connections with former co-workers, supervisors and alumni from your alma mater. Consider emailing holiday greetings with appropriate updates about what is new with you. Better yet, send out traditional greeting cards with hand written notes of thanks and appreciation.

Assess Your Career Wardrobe

Be ready for that interview call. Take stock of your current career wardrobe and consider using any gift cards you may receive to make sure you have the essential pieces that every professional should have in their closet.
