Jacksonville native interns at Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce through University of Richmond summer fellowship

Sarah Ramirez, ’16, of Jacksonville, Fla., is working as a government affairs intern at The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce through the University of Richmond’s Summer Fellowship (URSF) program.

This summer, hundreds of UR students are completing summer fellowships through The Richmond Guarantee, a University promise to provide a fellowship for at least one summer research or internship experience for all traditional undergraduate students.

Ramirez, an international studies and political science double major, says this internship is furthering her academic interests while also helping others. The Chamber works to influence Virginia politics in order to connect the Hispanic community to mainstream society, and Ramirez’s work provides integral support for those goals.

Ramirez says her favorite part of this summer experience is working in the Chamber’s free legal clinic for civil and immigration cases where she facilitates consultations for clients from lawyers who volunteer their time. She enjoys exploring the effects of immigration policies through these meetings and takes pride in offering her skills to help the community.

“I am very grateful to the summer fellowship program,” says Ramirez. “Without the fellowship funding I would not have been able to stay in Richmond this summer.”

“This internship is helping connect me with leading professionals who share my interest in supporting the Hispanic community, and the nonprofit experience is valuable in my future studies and career,” Ramirez added.
