Kenyan students in Barack Obama Leadership Program to visit Jepson School of Leadership Studies

August 15, 2016

Students from the Kenya-based Barack Obama Leadership Program will visit the University of Richmond’s Jepson School of Leadership Studies on Aug. 16 as part of a seven-day visit to the United States.

The Barack Obama Leadership Program seeks to prepare African students for future leadership. Students in the program examine leadership qualities and styles; study global economic, cultural and political issues; and develop critical thinking and analytic skills.

“At the Jepson School, we recognize that leadership studies must be international in its scope and reputation,” said Sandra Peart, dean of the Jepson School. “This visit is an excellent opportunity to embrace those international connections.”

“We are delighted to welcome student visitors from the Barack Obama Leadership Program to the Jepson School and look forward to sharing how we approach the complexities and challenges of leadership and ethical engagement in society,” said Kerstin Soderlund, associate dean for student and external affairs, who will provide the students with an overview of leadership studies.

Students also will tour the campus and participate in discussions led by Julian Hayter and Chris von Rueden, assistant professors of leadership studies.

The visit to the Jepson School is organized through the Richmond-based Heroes and Dreams Academy, which received grant funding through President Obama’s “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative.
