Wall Street Journal ranks Richmond #74 out of 1,000 Top Colleges; UR makes 'Top 10' list for ability to combine research and teaching

Editor's Note: The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings were recalculated in June. This release reflects the updated ranking. The University of Richmond ranked 74.

The University of Richmond was ranked #74 out of 1,000 colleges across the nation in the inaugural The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Ranking.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this pioneer ranking of U.S. colleges and universities puts “student success and learning, based on 100,000 current student voices, at its heart.”

The ranking is based on 15 factors across four categories:

  • 40 percent of each school’s overall score comes from student outcomes, including how they fare after leaving campus,
  • 30 percent from the school’s resources,
  • 20 percent from how well it engages its students, and
  • 10 percent from the learning environment, or diversity.

University of Richmond survey results, which were on a scale of zero to 10, with 10 representing strongest agreement included:

8.89/10

Worth the Cost: Do you think your college will be worth what you and your family are paying?
8.31/10

Career Preparation: Do you think your education will prepare you for your career?
8.8/10

Richmond also scored well on student engagement with 17.1 out of a total 20 points.

In individual categories, University of Richmond made a “Top 10” list. Richmond was ranked #8 for Top Faculties, schools that do the best in combining scholarly research with classroom instruction.

The only Virginia school to rank higher than the University of Richmond was the University of Virginia.

The university consistently ranks as a top-tier liberal arts university and a “best value” by The Princeton Review, U.S. News & World Report, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Smart Money magazine, Forbes.com and other leading college guides. Richmond also was selected as one of MONEY and ESSENCE’s 50 Best Colleges for African-Americans.
