October 7, 2016

The Virginia State Reading Association (VSRA) awarded Tammy Milby, director of reading in University of Richmond’s Department of Education, the Jones-Daly Faculty Involvement Award for her work in furthering PK-12 literacy in Virginia.

This award recognizes college and university faculty who partner and support the efforts of VSRA and local reading councils and engage in visible efforts to improve PK-12 literacy.

Milby currently serves as the president-elect of the Virginia College Reading Educators, a special interest professional council associated with VSRA. She began the Student Ambassador Program, which allows university students to attend professional conferences and gain valuable literacy teaching strategies. Milby also volunteers as a guest reader for area schools, coordinates book donation drives and provides literacy tutoring.

"Literacy is so valuable for every aspect of life,” said Milby. “It provides a strong foundation for life and empowers our community.”

VSRA is a professional organization actively engaged in promoting literacy throughout Virginia by sharing current instructional strategies and research.
