International Film Series celebrates global cultures with free screenings, a concert and museum exhibition

University of Richmond will host the 29th annual International Film Series beginning Sept. 8, offering eight free on-campus screenings to the university and local Richmond community through Nov. 19.

New this year, one screening will be followed by a concert inspired by Prince’s “Purple Rain,” and an animated film will complement a UR Museums exhibition on humor in Japanese art.

Films include:

  • “Elena” (Brazil), Sept. 8 and 10
  • “The Kaiser’s Lackey” (Germany), Sept. 15 and 17
  • “Maliglutit (Searchers)” (Canada), Sept. 22 and 24
  • “Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Red In It” (United States) Oct. 6 and 8.
    • Note: This film is a tribute to Prince’s “Purple Rain.” A concert with musician/actor Mdou Moctar will follow the screening.
  • “Germany Year Zero” (Germany/Italy), Oct. 20 and 22
  • “Miss Hokusai” (Japan), Nov. 3 and 5
    • This film complements a UR Museums exhibition, “Unexpected Smiles: Seven Types of Humor in Japanese Paintings.”
  •  “Fire at Sea” (Italy/France), Nov. 10 and 12
  • “The Infinite Happiness” (France), Nov. 17 and 19

As part of the series, the annual African Film Weekend will include five additional films from September 29 to October 2.

Unless otherwise noted, films are screened in the University of Richmond Robins School of Business, Queally Hall, Ukrop Auditorium Fridays at 3 and 7:30 p.m. and again on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. Friday afternoon screenings feature faculty-led introductions and post-film discussion. All films are played in their original language with English subtitles.

The IFS offers a program of films expertly curated by University of Richmond faculty with a mission to spark conversation and build bridges through meaningful dialogue. We invite audiences to join moderated post-film discussions and share insight. Free and open to the public, all films are screened in their original language with English subtitles. Sponsored by University of Richmond International Education and the Boatwright Memorial Library’s Media Resource Center.

During the spring 2018 semester, the series will resume with another set of films, including the 13th annual ChinaFest Film Weekend. Details will be available later this year.
