UR President and cellist Ronald A. Crutcher to perform American premiere of piece by Cuban composer Daniel Guzmán Loyzaga

Trio de Richmond, a trio featuring cellist Ronald A. Crutcher, University of Richmond president; Michael Davison, UR professor of music; pianist Joanne Kong, Richmond’s director of accompaniment and coordinator of chamber ensembles will perform the American premiere of “Trio Op.3.”

The piece, composed by internationally renowned Cuban composer and conductor Daniel Guzmán Loyzaga, will premiere during a UR Chamber Ensembles Concert April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Camp Concert Hall. UR students will also premiere three new works written for them by Loyzaga.

Loyzaga, University of Richmond’s Department of Music artist-in-residence is sharing his expertise in Cuban music working with students on jazz, classical music and salsa compositions during a six-week residency this spring.

“Cuban rhythm are everywhere in the western hemisphere, but people are not aware of it because of our country’s historical separation from Cuba,” said Michael Davison, professor of music and longtime friend of Loyzaga. “Daniel is an extremely talented performer, composer and educator, and his work with our community is an example of how music and relationships connect cultures.”
