University of Richmond psychology professor receives lifetime achievement award from Society for the History of Psychology

David E. Leary, professor at the University of Richmond, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for the History of Psychology. Formerly dean of the university’s School of Arts and Sciences, Leary is known in the field for his research on the impact of the humanities – including art, literature, philosophy, and religion – on the development of modern psychology and the impact of modern psychology on American culture.
He is currently researching the impact of literature on psychology.
Before joining Richmond as dean in 1989, Leary was professor of psychology, history and the humanities, chair of psychology and director of the history and theory of psychology program at the University of New Hampshire, the only Ph.D. program of its kind in the country.
Leary has edited two books and written more than 50 articles and chapters. He is a contributing editor of the Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences, History of Psychology, and Theory and Psychology. He is a fellow of three divisions of the American Psychological Association, Association for Psychological Science, and Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences.
