"UR Football Comes Home" exhibit at Boatwright Library traces Richmond football history, from original Colts nickname through new Robins Stadium

August 31, 2010

An archival exhibit about the history of football at the University of Richmond from its 1878 founding by two literary societies to the upcoming opening of the new Robins Stadium is on display at Boatwright Memorial Library on campus.

Sixty-three items, including photos of games, coaches and past stadiums, game programs, newspapers, a helmet, megaphone, sweater and more take viewers through 132 years, from when the team was originally known as the Colts through the  Spiders’ 1968 Tangerine Bowl victory, the 2008 NCAA FCS championship, and the first game at Robins Stadium coming up Sept. 18 against Elon University.

A digital version of the exhibit can be seen online at football.urlibraries.org. Both the actual and virtual displays are free and open to the public.

Fred Anderson and Michael Whitt of the university’s archives division assembled the items for the exhibit and website. The exhibit remains on display through Jan. 29.
