SCS Night recognizes the academic achievements of graduates

On Wednesday, May 6, 2009, the School of Continuing Studies held SCS Night, its annual awards reception and honors program. More than 350 people gathered at the Modlin Center for the Arts to celebrate the accomplishments of the SCS Class of 2009.

After recognizing the graduates of each program, Dean Narduzzi welcomed SCS's academic program chairs to the stage to recognize the top graduates in their respective programs with SCS Book Awards.

Samuel E. Perry, Jr. and Nancy B. Perry Book Award (Grades K-6) – Stephanie B. Norris

Ann C. Taylor Book Award (Grades 7-12) – John F. Kirn

SCS also named its student participants in Commencement ceremonies. Those included Vincent West, named the student Commencement speaker, and Judy Casella, BLA, given the honor of introducing the Commencement speaker. West and Casella are both liberal arts majors. Human resource management major Brian Taylor was named Mace Bearer. Liberal arts major Annette Branch was named U.S. Flag Bearer. Kimberly Harley, a liberal arts major with a concentration in education, was recognized as the University of Richmond Flag Bearer. David Wade, also a Human resource management major, was recognized as the SCS Banner Bearer.

Brenda Neckvatal was selected by students to receive the Jean H. Proffitt Student Service Award for her outstanding service to the University community and the community at large.

West also received the Elizabeth Spindler Scott Book Collection Award in recognition of his scholarly interest in books and the development of his personal library.

Aleta Fonville, an IT management major and active SCS Student Government Association member, received the Colonel (USA, Ret.) Porcher L. Taylor, Jr., Ph.D. Book Award in Leadership. Fonville was recognized for her natural leadership qualities inside and outside the classroom.

Veronica Franco-Aguilar, a human resource management graduate certificate student, received the Joanita Bbaale Senoga Book Award in recognition of excellence by a student whose native language is not English.

In recognition of her outstanding service and leadership to the SCS Student Government Association, Carleen Harris received the Taylor Kie Cousins Memorial Book Award. Harris is a liberal arts major.

In addition to student awards, two faculty members were honored for their contributions. Robert S. Kelley, Ed.D., received the Itzkowitz Family Distinguished Faculty Award. Kelley, an adjunct faculty member in the Human Resource Management program, teaches undergraduate and graduate class at SCS.

Jean Moorefield, Ph.D., was recognized for her 25 years of service to the University. Moorefield received the University's 25 Year Service Medallion, which will adorn her academic regalia at Commencement and other academic ceremonies.

W. Joseph Winston, '71, received the Gibb Family Distinguished Faculty Award.
